ABOUT

Can Deniz Portre 2_edited.png

Born in İstanbul, I graduated from Binghamton University in New York and Boğaziçi University in İstanbul. After finishing my master's at Domus Academy in Italy, I returned to Istanbul and studied interior design at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. I began working in the art department on film sets, contributing to four local and three international feature films, including two as an assistant director.

I co-wrote and co-directed the short film Museum of Broken Love before writing and directing my first solo short, Black Box (2020). The film premiered at festivals such as Sarajevo, Arlington, Brno16, Antalya, VisioniCorte, Oulu, and Asiana, winning Best Fiction Film at the Star Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Boston Turkish Film Festival, and a Special Mention at Bašta Fest.

In 2024, I developed and directed All The Way, a sports docuseries on women's volleyball, which is currently in post-production.

Since relocating to Toronto in 2023, I have been pursuing my career as a writer-director in Canada and was selected for the Toronto Arts Foundation's Newcomer Artist Program in 2025.

Alumni of Talents Sarajevo 2025, I’m currently in post-production on my Canadian short film Happy Birthday, Kızım, and developing a feature titled The Last Drop, slated for 2027.
